Our practice as a group and as individuals extends far beyond just Tuesday evenings and consists of:

Zazen - Seated (zazen) and walking (kinhin) meditation; 25 minutes per round. If you have your own cushion (zafu) or seiza bench, please bring it. A limited number of cushions and chairs are available. Please wear modest, loose-fitting clothing that doesn't inhibit sitting comfortably. For introductory instruction, please refer to the ZMM website (Zazen Introduction). We use this information, along with the ZMM Still Point video, as the source of our beginning instruction for new attendees.

Liturgy - Brief chanting service with full bows (prostrations) includes the Heart Sutra, Healing Dharani, Four Bodhisattva Vows, and Evening Gatha.

Dharma Teachings - On a bi-weekly basis, we rely on recorded Dharma talks by teachers from Zen Mountain Monastery to provide authentic Zen Buddhist teachings.

Right Action - The Zen Dharma Community will celebrate its 10th anniversary at Westminster Church in January of 2008. It has engaged with that congregation in efforts like the annual 5K run for Habitat for Humanity and Mitzvah Day, an interfaith work project held in conjunction with Temple Beth Zion. ZDC regularly donates food and hygiene items to local food pantries and soup kitchens.

Recently the Zen Dharma Community has had the opportunity to host public talks on Buddhist topics by esteemed teachers from Zen Mountain Monastery. Many members enjoyed the privilege of organizing and participating in the events surrounding the three-day visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the University at Buffalo campus in September of 2006. Representatives serve on the Board of Directors of the Network of Religious Communities, an active interfaith group in Western New York. Members have, from time to time, contributed to television broadcasts and panel discussions that focus on multi-faith concerns as part of ongoing interfaith dialogue in Western New York. Members also lead the Zen Buddhist Meditation program at the Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, NY.
